Mardi Gras

Dear Fellow Friends! Today I'm going to talk about Mardi Gras. Mardi Gras is February 9th. It's also known as Tuesday fat or as most people say Fat Tuesday. Mardi Gras is celebrated in many different places. The most known place that celebrates Mardi Gras is in New Orleans, Louisiana. They have parades and big celebrations. They also have much more. Mardi Gras colors are purple, gold and green.
Mardi Gras originated in New Orleans by a French explorer. Mardi Gras is a big celebration celebrated on a Tuesday because the next day is Ash Wednesday. For people who don't know what Ash Wednesday I will explain. Most people who celebrate Ash Wednesday are Catholic. There are also some other religions that celebrate Ash Wednesday. Ash Wednesday is forty days before Easter. In those forty days it is called Lent. During Lent you give up something that is really important to you. They celebrate Mardi Gras the day before Ash Wednesday because you're supposed to eat a bunch food that is healthy for you. It is such a big holiday in New Orleans because of the Spanish and French influences over the settlements hundreds of years ago.
Some foods that are big in New Orleans are gumbo, jambalaya, beignets, king cake. Gumbo is okra. Jambalaya is a Cajun dish of rice with shrimp, chicken and vegetables. Beignets are little fritters. King Cake is a cake that is frosted with Mardi Gras colors and has a little plastic baby in it. Whoever has the baby in their piece of cake is the king. They are treated like kings for the rest of the day. Also the next year they are responsible for buying the king cake or hosting the next years party. King Cakes are probably the most bought cakes during Mardi Gras. Mardi Gras is supposed to be this fun celebration that everyone enjoys.
